A trauma-informed ritual, by construction
Some children in every room carry more than the others, and a connection activity that ambushes one of them does harm that a year of kindness posters cannot undo. The protocol was written with that child in mind, and the rules are not settings.
- The pass is real. Any child may decline any question, without explanation and without consequence. Not “let’s just try”. If passing carries a social cost, the whole thing is coercion with a friendly interface.
- Every question allows a surface answer. A child must always be able to deflect with humour or say something generic and still have taken part correctly. Questions are framed as figured out or working on, never as ongoing pain.
- Nothing requires disclosure of harm. No question may need a child to disclose trauma, abuse, family dysfunction or mental-health struggle to answer honestly. The emotional balance across a session has a floor of zero for those topics, and an adult reads every question before class.
- Escalation is slow and clamped. Questions get more personal across weeks, never within a lesson, and the software cannot move a class’s level by more than a small step per session even if every signal spikes.
- Predictable structure. The same shape every time — names, colour, gaze, guess, question, two taps — so a child always knows what is coming and what is expected. Predictability is a large part of what makes a room feel safe.
- Stop conditions. The teacher ends a round if a child becomes distressed or the room turns on someone. The ritual is never more important than the child in front of you.

What it does not do. VEN Method does not screen for trauma, detect adverse experiences, flag children or route disclosures anywhere. If a child says something that indicates harm, that is a safeguarding matter under your school’s procedure — immediately, with your people, and with no software in the loop. Anyone selling “AI trauma detection” in a classroom product is selling something that will be wrong, and being wrong there is unforgivable.
